Ford Oil Change Intervals

Quick links:

The general recommendation by Ford Motor Company for oil change intervals on their vehicles is around 7,500 miles or every six months, whichever comes first. This interval applies mainly to newer vehicles, and vehicles not driven in tough conditions. Older Ford vehicles using conventional oil will likely need an oil change every 3,000 miles or three months, whichever comes first.

What are “tough conditions”? Tough or severe conditions are based on if any one of these factors below is true:

  • A typical trip is less than 10 miles or 16 km. Especially when outside temperatures are below freezing.
  • On most trips, your vehicle is idling extensively. An example is frequent driving in stop-and-go traffic.
  • The vehicle is often driven in dusty areas, such as on dirt or gravel roads.
  • The vehicle is often used for towing a trailer or if you use a car-top carrier. These put extra demand on the engine.
  • The vehicle is used for delivery service, police, taxi, or other commercial purposes.

If you decide on a do-it-yourself oil change, then an oil changing kit from Power Oil Center is an easy and convenient way to get all the tools you need.

Let’s take a look at some specific Ford vehicle oil change intervals.

Ford 6.7 Diesel Oil Change Interval

The 6.7L Powerstroke diesel engine should have an oil change interval of 10,000 miles or as indicated by the Intelligent Oil Life Monitor system. This system will change the interval based on driving conditions, so your interval could be sooner depending on how you drive your truck. 15W-40 is the recommended standard oil type, but 5W-40 gives a more extended range of operating temperature.

Ford 7.3 Oil Change Interval

The 7.3L Powerstroke diesel oil change interval is usually 5,000 miles with 15W-40 oil. However, if you run your 7.3L Powerstroke in cold weather, 5W-40 full synthetic oil is recommended. The 7.3L V8 gas engine has an oil change interval of 10,000 miles

Ford C Max Oil Change Interval

The Ford C Max Hybrid takes 5W-20 full synthetic motor oil. The oil change interval is generally 10,000 miles or 12 months. The Intelligent Oil Life Monitor system may calculate different intervals depending on your driving habits.

Ford Escape Oil Change Interval

New Ford Escapes have an oil change interval of 7,500 miles. Most new Escapes should use synthetic oil. Your oil change interval depends on the oil. If you use conventional, then it’s 3,000 miles, and if you use a synthetic blend, then it’s around 5,000 miles. The recommended type of oil for new Ford Escapes is 5w-20 or 5w-30 synthetic motor oil.

Ford Explorer Oil Change Interval

The new Ford Explorer oil change interval is typically 5,000 miles, but it depends on what type of oil you use too. Synthetic oil can go longer than 5,000 miles. Ford recommends 5W-30 full synthetic oil for the 2.3L engine in the 2018 Ford Explorer. The 3.5L V6 engine in the same model takes 5W-20 oil. Always check your manual for specifics.

Ford F150 Oil Change Interval

The Ford F150 comes with the Intelligent-Oil-Life Monitor system. This system displays a message in the information display when your truck is ready for an oil change. Most Ford F150s will display the oil change message between 7,500 and 10,000 miles for normal use drivers. (See above for examples of severe use) If the display of your vehicle shows the message prematurely, you should have oil changes performed at least every six months or 5,000 miles.

According to the 2020 Ford F150 owner’s manual, most engine options will use SAE 5W-30 engine oil or SAE 0W-30 (for 22-below weather temperatures).

Synthetic blend oil will likely use an interval between those two. Check your manual for specifics on the type of oil. For example, a 2016 Ford Focus with a 2.0L inline-four engine takes 5W-20 semi-synthetic. The Ford Focus ST oil change interval is the same depending on whether you use conventional, synthetic, or synthetic-blend oil.

Ford Fusion Oil Change Interval

The Ford Fusion oil change interval for new vehicles is between 3,000 and 5,000 miles for conventional oil and 7,500 and 10,000 miles for synthetic. Most newer Ford Fusions require full synthetic oil. The 1.5L and 2.5L four-cylinder takes 5W-20, and the 2.0L four-cylinder takes 5W-30.
